How Consumer Expectations Have Reshaped India’s Packaging Industry Over the Last Four Decades

By Shailesh Sheth, Chairman & Managing Director, Kris Flexipacks

When people discuss the evolution of packaging, the focus often falls on technology. New materials, advanced printing techniques, innovative formats, and improved manufacturing processes have undoubtedly transformed the industry over the years.

But technology alone does not explain how packaging has changed.

Over the last four decades, some of the most significant shifts in packaging have been driven by consumers themselves. As lifestyles evolved, purchasing habits changed, and expectations became more sophisticated, packaging adapted alongside them.

One of the most visible changes has been the growing demand for information.

There was a time when packaging primarily served the purpose of identifying a product and carrying a brand name. Today, consumers expect considerably more. Ingredient lists, nutritional information, certifications, usage instructions, manufacturing details, and sustainability claims are increasingly influencing purchase decisions.

The rise of organised retail and e-commerce has accelerated this trend. In many categories, packaging has become one of the most important sources of product information available to consumers at the point of purchase.

Convenience has emerged as another defining expectation.

Urbanisation, smaller households, changing family structures, and fast-paced lifestyles have influenced how products are consumed and stored. Consumers increasingly look for packaging that is easy to carry, easy to open, easy to reseal, and practical for everyday use.

As a result, formats such as stand-up pouches, resealable packs, and portable packaging solutions have become commonplace across multiple categories. Features that were once considered innovative are now often viewed as standard expectations.

At the same time, packaging has taken on a much larger role in brand communication.

Forty years ago, consumers often had fewer options within a category. Today, they are presented with numerous alternatives competing for attention on the same shelf. In such an environment, packaging frequently becomes the first interaction between a brand and a potential customer.

This has led brands to invest more heavily in packaging design, print quality, premium finishes, embellishments, and formats that help products stand out in crowded retail environments. Packaging is no longer expected to simply protect the product. It is increasingly expected to communicate quality, personality, and brand positioning.

Consumer expectations around trust have evolved as well.

Packaging today is expected to reassure consumers about product quality and authenticity. Clear information, secure seals, tamper-evident features, and consistent presentation all contribute to perceptions of reliability. This is particularly important in categories such as food, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and personal care, where confidence in the product is closely linked to confidence in the packaging.

More recently, sustainability has become a major consideration.

Consumers are paying closer attention to issues such as material usage, recyclability, and environmental impact. While functionality, affordability, and operational requirements continue to remain important, sustainability has become an increasingly influential factor in packaging decisions across industries.

If there is one lesson the industry has learned over the last four decades, it is that consumer expectations rarely remain static. Information, convenience, branding, trust, and sustainability have all become significantly more important over time, and each has influenced the direction in which packaging has evolved.

Technology will continue to advance and new packaging solutions will continue to emerge. But as the industry looks ahead, one thing remains clear: packaging may be enabled by innovation, but it will continue to be shaped by the consumer.
